What does a normal digit span actually look like in the published literature? This page collects the reference values — the classic 7±2, forward and backward normative samples, the forward–backward gap, and the effects of age and education — with the source attached to every figure.

What digit span is — and how big it typically is

The digit span task is the oldest memory test still in use: John Jacobs published it in 1887, Binet and Simon adopted it for their 1905 intelligence scale, and it remains part of the WAIS and WISC batteries today (test history: https://www.millisecond.com/library/digitspan). The famous adult reference value comes from George Miller’s 1956 paper: the span of immediate memory hovers around seven items — “the magical number seven, plus or minus two” — and decimal digits are the canonical example, with people typically recalling about seven of them (https://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Miller/). Test publishers summarize the healthy-adult average memory span for digits as 5 to 9 (https://www.millisecond.com/library/digitspan).

Forward vs backward: repeating digits in reverse order is reliably harder, because it adds mental manipulation on top of storage. In 258 healthy Indian adults aged 50–80, the mean forward span was 5.60 (SD 1.22) versus 4.00 (SD 1.40) backward (https://www.scielo.br/j/dn/a/3NJ6QSHkvdtT8XhDq9DXY7d/?format=pdf). In 340 healthy Turkish adults aged 50–83, the longest forward span averaged 5.41 (SD 1.12) versus 3.99 (SD 1.03) backward, and 80.9% of participants landed between 5 and 8 forward (https://tjn.org.tr/full-text/2093/eng). Across these samples backward runs roughly one to two digits below forward — a gap in that range is the norm, not a red flag.

Age and education move the number more than anything else. The Turkish normative study found forward and backward spans statistically stable from 50 to 69, then significantly lower at 70–83 — and years of education was the single strongest predictor, explaining 25–34% of the variance in scores (https://tjn.org.tr/full-text/2093/eng). Frequently asked questions

What is a good digit span score?

There is no official cutoff, but published anchors help: the classic adult figure is about 7±2 digits forward (Miller 1956), test publishers give 5–9 as the healthy-adult average, and normative samples of adults over 50 average roughly 5.4–6.6 forward and about 4 backward. Judge yourself mainly by the trend in your own history.

Why is my backward span lower than my forward span?

That is the expected pattern. Forward recall is passive storage; backward recall must also reorder the sequence mentally, which loads working memory and executive control. In the normative samples above, backward scores run about one to two digits lower than forward — a gap in that range is typical, not a warning sign.

Does digit span change with age?

Yes, modestly. In the Turkish normative sample (n = 340), forward and backward spans were statistically stable from 50 to 69 and significantly lower at 70–83. Education mattered even more than age — years of schooling explained 25–34% of score variance, the strongest single predictor in both normative studies.

Is an online digit span test the same as the WAIS digit span?
