Myth 1: “Schulte tables make you read 28–35% faster”

Verdict: no published study exists. The “28–35% faster reading” claim circulates widely on Schulte table websites, but it traces to no published study — no paper, no dataset, no citation. The largest randomized controlled trial of brain training (Owen et al., 2010, Nature, n=11,430) found improvement only on the trained task itself, not on untrained abilities such as reading.

We traced the number across dozens of pages. It appears with shifting values — sometimes 28%, sometimes 35%, sometimes both as a range — always credited to unnamed “studies” that are never cited. No bibliographic trail leads to any journal, conference or thesis. A number that changes shape and has no source is marketing copy, not a finding.

What the evidence does support: reading speed is governed by eye-movement mechanics — fixation duration, saccade size, regressions — mapped in Rayner’s 1998 review of twenty years of eye-tracking research. Schulte practice makes you faster at Schulte grids; whether that transfers to reading is exactly the kind of far-transfer claim the 2010 Nature trial failed to find for brain training in general.

Myth 2: “Attention improves by 47%”

Verdict: a number without a source. The “47% improvement in attention” figure is repeated across training websites, usually credited to unnamed research after “eight weeks of practice”. No published paper contains it. Attention is trainable in principle — Posner and Petersen’s attention-network theory (1990) established it as a decomposable cognitive system — but no validated Schulte-specific effect size of this kind exists.

The figure rarely travels alone. It shows up with companions — “32% faster visual processing”, “28% longer attention span” — a family of precise-looking percentages with no common source. Precision is doing rhetorical work here: a specific number feels scientific even when no scientific process produced it.

What would count as evidence: a controlled trial with a pre-registered outcome measure (a validated attention test), a control group, and a published effect size. Small studies of that kind do exist for Schulte-style training — with modest, task-near effects — but none of them reports 47%.

Myth 3: “There is a Guinness-certified world record”

Verdict: false — no certified record exists. Guinness World Records has no Schulte table category, and no other organization certifies one. Every “world record” you have seen for this exercise is community-reported and unverified — usually from mouse-click apps where found cells gray out, a different and easier task than the classic grid. The honest way to handle such claims is to list them with sources, labeled as unverified.

Without a governing body there are no standardized rules to break: grid sizes, input methods, visual aids and timers all differ between apps. A 2.5-second claim from a click app and a 15-second paper time are not two scores in one sport — they are different sports.

Verdict: widely repeated, weakly sourced. The story that Schulte tables were developed to train pilots and astronauts appears on hundreds of pages — often with contradictory details about who invented the method, where and when — but no primary document (a training manual, a military report, an original publication) has surfaced to confirm it. Treat it as folklore: plausible, popular and unverified.

We checked the retellings against each other: the inventor is variously described as an American neuropsychiatrist or a German psychologist, working in the 1960s or later — details that mutate from page to page. Documented history does not usually shift this fast. What is documented is the opposite direction of travel: the exercise spread through speed-reading courses and attention-training practice, and the pilot story spread along with it.

Myth 5: “Schulte tables can treat or cure ADHD”

Verdict: no — and claiming so crosses a legal line. A Schulte table is a training game, not a medical treatment, and marketing it as one crosses a regulatory line: in 2016 the US Federal Trade Commission made the brain-training company Lumosity pay $2 million for advertising cognitive benefits — including for ADHD — without adequate scientific evidence. Concerns about ADHD belong with a qualified clinician, not a grid app.

To be precise about the science: a handful of small, preliminary studies — mostly testing Schulte training alongside standard treatment, not instead of it — report modest improvements on attention measures. That is hypothesis-generating, not proof of treatment efficacy, and none of it supports “cure” language aimed at parents.
